The Basmala consisted of only four words, yet even that first technical section revealed a structure layer by layer. We now move to the surah that immediately follows those four words: Al-Fatiha.
Al-Fatiha is no ordinary surah. It is the Quran’s first surah, has seven verses and is perhaps the Quranic passage most often repeated in Muslim daily life. It is recited in every unit of prayer. Its name, ‘The Opening,’ is apt: if the Basmala is the first sign upon the door, Al-Fatiha is like the key that opens it.
The table now becomes more crowded. In the Basmala we worked with four words and 19 letters. Al-Fatiha contains 7 verses, 29 words under our principal count, 139 letters and a total Abjad value of 10,143. As the data increases, the numbers will grow longer. Let them. Our aim is not to make the numbers look attractive, but to show plainly where they come from without hiding the data from the reader. First, let us examine the main table that will remain before us throughout this section:

First layer: The seven verses begin to speak
A first look at the table naturally raises a question: seven rows, a few letter counts and a few Abjad values—how can forty-nine separate signs emerge from this? Good. Let us begin with that question. We will first examine the simplest relationships, then open the same text word by word, letter by letter and position by position. If a number grows long, there is no need to be intimidated: every fixed figure will be tied as clearly as possible to the verse or word it represents.
Sign 1: A warm-up—surah and verse numbers
Begin at the simplest point. Al-Fatiha is surah 1 and consists of 7 verses. We use no Abjad value, letter count or word calculation. We write the surah number and follow it with verse numbers 1 through 7. That is the entire warm-up.
Sign 2: The letter counts of the verses speak
Set the verse numbers aside and consider only the letter counts. The first verse, the Basmala, has 19 letters, followed by 17, 12, 11, 19, 18 and 43. Placing the surah number first and writing these seven values in order creates a new number.
Sign 3: Verse number and letter count side by side
Combine the preceding two views in one line: each verse number stands immediately beside that verse’s letter count. At the end, add 139, the total letter count of Al-Fatiha. The spaces merely separate the blocks; they perform no operation.
Sign 4: When Abjad values enter the table
Now add another column. Beside each verse’s letter count, write its total Abjad value. The result is a 38-digit number. A pleasing detail is that the number of digits, 38, is itself 19 × 2.
Sign 5: Three pieces of information at once
One step further: retain the identity of each verse by placing its number, letter count and Abjad value in the same block. Applying the same rule to all seven verses produces a longer number without introducing any new data.
Sign 6: The totals row is not silent either
Leave the long sequences for a moment and look at the bottom of the main table. The verse numbers sum to 28; Al-Fatiha has 29 words, 139 letters and a total Abjad value of 10,143. We simply place these four totals side by side.
Sign 7: Long numbers are not always necessary
Sometimes no imposing long number is needed. From the same table, join 28 with 139, 1 with 10,143, and then the surah number, verse count, total letters and total Abjad value. Small numbers knock on the same door.
The final sequence, 1 7 139 10143, is especially simple: surah number, number of verses, total letter count and total Abjad value. Four basic data points, with nothing added between them.
Sign 8: How are the words distributed among the verses?
The seven verses of Al-Fatiha do not contain equal numbers of words: 4, 4, 2, 3, 4, 3 and 9. We preserve that distribution exactly and write it with the surah number and verse count. This is not interpretation, but the bare word counts of the verses.
Sign 9: The counter grows as Al-Fatiha progresses
Imagine a counter moving through Al-Fatiha from beginning to end. At the close of verse 1 we have 19 letters and an Abjad value of 786; at the close of verse 2 the cumulative totals reach 36 letters and 1,367. We follow these two accumulating counters side by side through verse 7.
Second layer: Placing the 29 words on the table
We have seen the first nine signs at the verse level. Now we bring the lens closer and order Al-Fatiha’s 29 words. The first four are the Basmala, an advantage because the structure introduced in the preceding section is carried unchanged into Al-Fatiha.

Sign 10: Ordering the 29 words one by one
Place Al-Fatiha’s 29 words in sequence. Each fixed word number comes first, followed immediately by its letter count. The first four blocks will be familiar: they are the four words of the Basmala. The preceding section is not lost; it is carried into Al-Fatiha.
Sign 11: 1729—a small sign with two layers
Three short numbers: surah number 1, verse count 7 and word count 29. Placed together, they form 1729. This number is exactly divisible by 19, and the sum of its digits is also 19—a small sign with two layers.
Sign 12: Placing 1729 before the 29 words
Think of 1729 as a heading. Append the 29-word order-and-letter sequence just constructed without changing it. The number extends to 82 digits, but every block remains readable and comes directly from the table.
Sign 13: Word order, letter count and Abjad in one frame
Now define each word with three items: its position in Al-Fatiha, its letter count and its Abjad value. Verse numbers are inserted at their natural boundaries. The small table has now yielded a detailed identity card.
Sign 14: Opening the words
Instead of merely stating a word’s Abjad value, we now open it completely. The word number and letter count are followed by the Abjad values of its individual letters. All 29 words of Al-Fatiha become visible down to their component letters.
Sign 15: Does a word’s position within its verse matter?
A word’s overall position in Al-Fatiha is not its only address. It also has a position within its own verse: first word, second word, third word, and so on. This time, instead of the global position, we use that local address together with the letter count.
Sign 16: Gathering the large table into a single number
Now combine most of the principal data introduced so far: surah number, verse count, word count, letter count and total Abjad value at the beginning, followed by the position and Abjad value of each word within its verse. The number grows, but the rule remains single and clear.
Third layer: Totals are no longer enough—open all 139 letters
So far we have worked through verses and words. Now the analysis becomes more exacting. Rather than merely giving a total, we will display all 139 letters of Al-Fatiha one by one. The numbers will grow longer, which is useful: the reader can see every piece of data from beginning to end.
Sign 17: Al-Fatiha’s 139 letters take the stage
Do not stop at totals. After the surah number and total of 139 letters, write the Abjad value of every letter in Al-Fatiha in sequence. The result is a 255-digit number. The answer to ‘Where did this number come from?’ lies before us in the text itself, letter by letter.
Sign 18: Representing each verse by its own letters
In the preceding sign, the whole surah was opened as one continuous flow. Now retain the verse boundaries: first the surah and verse count, then each verse number, its letter count and the Abjad values of all its letters. The result has 274 digits.
Sign 19: A letter’s value is not enough—add its position
This time, give every letter two pieces of information: its Abjad value and its overall position in Al-Fatiha. The first letter is 1, the second 2, and so on up to 139. We thus answer ‘Which letter?’ not only with its value but also with its address in the text.
Sign 20: Adding seven separate letter sequences
Treat the letter values of the seven verses as seven separate large numbers. Then add those seven numbers together with the surah and verse data. The method has changed: instead of concatenation, we now consider the sum of separate sequences.
Fourth layer: Twenty-one distinct letters among the 139
We have opened all 139 letters. Now view the same text from another angle: how many distinct Arabic letters form these 139 characters, where does each first appear and what numerical values do they carry? Al-Fatiha does not leave these questions with an empty table.
Sign 21: 139 letters, but only 21 distinct letters
Al-Fatiha has 139 letters, but not 139 different signs from the alphabet. It uses 21 distinct letters. Adding the surah number, these 21 letters, the total of 139 letters and 29 words produces a very short result.
Sign 22: Where do these 21 letters first appear?
Each of these 21 distinct letters makes its first appearance somewhere in Al-Fatiha. Pair each letter with the number of the verse where it first occurs and with its Abjad value. We now include not only ‘which letter?’ but also ‘in which verse does it first appear?’
Sign 23: Including the first positions
The preceding sign used the first verse of occurrence. Now provide a more precise address: the position in Al-Fatiha where each distinct letter first appears. Placing the Abjad value beside this first position yields a number divisible by 19 not once, but twice.
Sign 24: Two short totals, two clean results
Let us pause from the long sequences. The first positions of the 21 distinct letters total 916, while their Abjad values total 3,605. Short operations using these two totals also remain within the same pattern.
Sign 25: Adding the frequency of each distinct letter
One further perspective: how often does each of these 21 letters occur through the surah? Write each frequency first and the letter’s Abjad value immediately after it. The information ‘which letter, how many times?’ now becomes visible in a single sequence.
Fifth layer: The name of the surah is not left outside
So far we have worked with the content of Al-Fatiha. But the surah also has a name: Al-Fatiha. If the structure concerns the surah as a whole, there is no special reason to leave its name aside. Let us see what happens when it is included.
Sign 26: The name ‘Al-Fatiha’ enters the table
Look now not inside the text but at its cover: the surah’s name is ‘Al-Fatiha.’ The name has seven letters and an Abjad value of 525. These two basic data points, 525 and 7, already yield a striking short result.
Sign 27: Breaking down 525 to reveal the letters of the name
The value 525 is a single total. What happens if, instead of using the total, we open the values of the seven letters in ‘Al-Fatiha’ one by one? The internal structure of the name is no longer hidden, and the digit sum of the resulting number contains another small sign.
Sign 28: The surah name beside the letter counts of the verses
Place the surah’s name on the same line as its verse structure. Put 525 first, followed by each verse number and letter count. The name and the physical structure of the text now meet in one sequence.
Sign 29: Writing the surah name letter by letter
It may be said that 525 is a ready-made total and therefore too easy. So remove it and replace it with the individual Abjad values of the seven letters in Al-Fatiha. The verse numbers and letter counts remain exactly where they were.
Sign 30: Three short numbers, one result
Hundreds of digits are not always needed. Take surah number 1, the Abjad value 525 of ‘Al-Fatiha,’ and the surah’s total letter count of 139. Simply add these three short numbers.
Sign 31: The surah name and the letter–Abjad structure of the verses
Keep the surah name at the beginning and append the three principal data points of each verse in order: verse number, letter count and Abjad value. The result is a 57-digit number. It is also a pleasant side note that 57 itself is 19 × 3.
Sign 32: Putting the name first and opening all 139 letters
Go one step further: place the seven letter values of the name Al-Fatiha first, followed by every one of the surah’s 139 letters. We do not avoid the long number; its very length makes all the data used in it visible.
Sign 33: Opening the name and the verses letter by letter
Arrange the same material while retaining the verse boundaries: the name Al-Fatiha, the verse count, and then each verse number, letter count and the Abjad values of its letters. The data does not change; only the layer of the text kept visible changes.
Sign 34: The overall positions of the letters enter the calculation
Add each letter’s overall position in Al-Fatiha to its value. The number now extends to 581 digits. It looks large, but every component has a known address. In a study that will deal with numbers of 12,699 digits, 581 digits need not intimidate us.
Sign 35: Every letter has two addresses
Each letter has two addresses: its overall position in the surah and its relative position within its verse. Writing these as pairs and combining them with the surah and verse data produces a new 526-digit representation.
Sixth layer: Information surrounding the text
Letters, words, verses and the surah name have taken us deep into the text’s internal structure. Now widen the frame. What happens when very different data—chronological order and even the physical movement of the mouth while Al-Fatiha is recited—enters the picture?
Sign 36: When chronological order enters the table
Al-Fatiha is surah 1 in Mushaf order and is taken as the 5th in chronological order. Write the chronological positions, surah numbers and verse counts of the first five revealed surahs. Then consider Al-Fatiha’s own short total.
Sign 37: Even the lips enter the count
Let us lift our eyes from the page. When Al-Fatiha is recited in Arabic, two sounds require the lips to close completely: B (ب) and M (م). B occurs four times and M fifteen times, totalling 19. Their Abjad values and verse distributions yield further results as well.

The pattern does not end with 4 + 15 = 19. The verse numbers in which B and M occur can also be tracked separately: 15 for B and 23 for M. Together they total 38.
Seventh layer: Returning to the inner world of the verses
In this final layer, we return to the individual verses. This time we will not ask only ‘How many letters?’ We will also examine Quran-wide occurrences of certain words, sentences that stand together in meaning and the internal order of the verses.
Sign 38: Echoes of the second verse across the Quran
The sentence in Al-Fatiha’s second verse, meaning ‘Praise belongs to God, Lord of the worlds,’ does not occur only here; it appears in 7 places in the Quran. List the surah and verse numbers of those places and append the number of occurrences, 7.
Sign 39: Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim—two familiar words
The third verse consists of only two words: Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim, both familiar from the Basmala. Their Quran-wide occurrence counts are 57 and 114—two separate multiples of 19. Then place their Abjad values side by side.
Sign 40: ‘Malik’ in the fourth verse
The fourth verse contains the word ‘Malik.’ Its occurrences attributed to God appear in 1:4 and 3:26. We place these two addresses side by side, with no further operation.
Sign 41: Opening the fourth verse letter by letter
Now place the same fourth verse under a magnifying glass: surah number, verse number, letter count, total Abjad value, followed by the individual Abjad values of all its letters. The complete numerical identity of this short verse is placed on one line.
Sign 42: The sentence at the surah’s centre has 19 letters
The fifth verse is one of the semantic centres of Al-Fatiha: ‘You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help.’ In Arabic, this sentence has exactly 19 letters. Its total Abjad value is also a multiple of 19.
Sign 43: Where do the four words of verse 5 stand?
Verse 5 has four words. Their positions within the verse are 1, 2, 3 and 4; their overall word positions in Al-Fatiha are 14, 15, 16 and 17. We place these two address systems side by side and then add each word’s letter count.
Sign 44: ‘Na‘budu’—the trace of the statement of worship
Trace the Quranic occurrences of ‘Na‘budu / we worship’ in this verse. Adding the relevant surah and verse numbers where it is directed to God gives 285.
Sign 45: ‘Ihdina’—the prayer for the right path begins
Verse 6 begins with ‘Ihdina / guide us.’ Place the first word of this prayer for the right path, with its letter values, within the surah and verse data. A small word and a short sequence; the result remains directly verifiable.
Sign 46: Following the word ‘sirat’
One of the central words in verses 6 and 7 is ‘sirat / path.’ It occurs 38 times in the Quran. Its occurrences together with ‘mustaqim’ are spread across 19 different surahs. Here, a short number and a long list of addresses present the same theme at two different scales.
More strikingly, the 27 verses in which ‘sirat’ appears with ‘mustaqim’ are distributed across 19 surahs. Writing the surah and verse numbers of all 27 addresses in order and appending 27 creates a 104-digit number. It is long, but every address remains visible.
Sign 47: Opening the seventh verse completely
Verse 7 is the longest in Al-Fatiha, with 43 letters. Rather than summarising it, place the surah and verse numbers, word count and the Abjad values of all 43 letters side by side. Then take one more short look at the verse’s three principal totals.
Sign 48: Verses 6 and 7 side by side
Verses 6 and 7 flow together in meaning as one prayer, so reading them together is natural. Their letter counts are 18 and 43; merely placing them side by side produces 1843. We then expand the verse number, letter count and Abjad data step by step.
Sign 49: What happens under the technical 28-word reading?
Under a technical reading in which the final expression in Al-Fatiha is treated linguistically as one word, the word count can be taken as 28 rather than 29. If such an alternative exists, let us not ignore it, but test it directly. Strikingly, the 28-word reading also remains within the system in the different structures below.
We have not merely repeated one formula forty-nine times. Sometimes we counted verses, sometimes ordered words, and sometimes opened all 139 letters individually. We examined first positions, included the surah name, moved to chronological order and even tracked the letters at which the lips close while Al-Fatiha is recited. The method changed; the text did not. And 19 reappeared through a surprising number of these different windows.
Al-Fatiha means ‘The Opening.’ In the Basmala we saw the first seal upon the door; in Al-Fatiha we turned the key. The structures encountered from here will grow larger, but we now know how to read their mathematical language.
